Project Overview

The Lower Pogues Run Project was part of a combined sewer overflow initiative constructed through downtown Indianapolis. The project’s general contractor was F.A. Wilhelm Construction. Midwest Mole, Inc. was selected as subcontractor to construct a 470-lf., 124-in. ID ring beam and lagging tunnel threaded with 96-in. Hobas®.

The Lower Pogues Run Project, in combination with other improvements in the area, would achieve 95 percent combined sewer overflow capture and limit overflow into White River and Eagle Creek.

Challenges

• Adjacent to I-70

• 30-ft. depths

• Unstable soil conditions

Solution

The Excavator Boring Shield allows the contractor to have full control over excavation at the face, plus the ability to extrude large boulders or other obstacles as needed.

Outcome

• Successful installation with no disruption to a traffic along I-70

• Reduced threat to public health and environment
