Project Overview
The City Trunk Line South Unit 3 is part of the LADWP’s Capital Improvement Program to replace a 102-year-old water pipeline in North Hollywood. The project includes 5,357-lf. of 60 and 72-inch steel casing for completion by open trench and microtunneling pipe jacking construction. Of this footage, four tunnels totaling 3,073-lf. were approved for installation with an Akkerman MTBM system. When completed, the bores would be connected to existing trunk lines.
Challenges
• Project site in a heavily congested commercial and residential area
• Complex traffic control plan and phasing
• Extensometers and inclinometers to monitor settlement
• Noise-canceling system with sound blankets to minimize construction noise
• Installations at up to 32-foot depths • First time this contractor used an MTBM as the self-performing contractor
Solution
The subcontractor utilized an SL82P Periphery Drive Microtunnel Boring Machine with Face-Access to complete all tunnels.
Outcome
Four alignments successfully completed with precision accuracy, without disruption
